E-Bikes and Scooters Are the #1 Battery Rejection at YYZ.
A lithium-powered vehicle shipped with the battery installed - e-bike, e-scooter, hoverboard, electric skateboard, or mobility scooter - is UN 3171 Class 9 dangerous goods, and there is no Watt-hour exemption that lets it skip classification. Shipping one by air without UN-certified packaging and a correctly classed Shipper's Declaration means the airline turns it away at acceptance. We handle the classification, packaging, and documentation so your unit clears YYZ the first time.

Our Service

What AÉRO-DG Does for Micromobility Shippers

Battery-Powered Vehicle Packaging

  • E-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards, electric skateboards, mobility scooters: UN 3171 Class 9 packaging with battery installed
  • Battery removed & packed with vehicle: UN 3481 compliance and Watt-hour rating verification
  • Standalone spare batteries: UN 3480 packaging to Packing Instruction 965
  • Battery condition screening - damaged, swollen, or recalled units flagged before they reach the airline

Cargo Aircraft Only (CAO) Compliance

  • Class 9 hazard labelling and overpack marking for CAO-restricted vehicles
  • Shipper's Declarations prepared correctly the first time - no missing Wh ratings or battery type errors
  • YYZ freight tender coordination for CAO-only cargo
  • Documentation signed by an IATA-certified DG specialist

UN-certified packaging and IATA documentation prepared for e-bike, e-scooter, and mobility device brands and distributors shipping through Toronto Pearson (YYZ).

Process

How It Works

1

Tell us what's shipping

E-bike, e-scooter, hoverboard, or mobility scooter - tell us whether the battery is installed, removed, or shipping separately, and its Watt-hour rating, so we can confirm the correct UN classification.

2

We package and verify compliance

UN-specification packaging matched to the hazard class, battery condition checked, and overpack labelling applied where CAO rules require it.

3

We prepare documents and tender at YYZ

Shipper's Declaration completed to Class 9 requirements, then tendered through the YYZ freight cargo process for your booked flight.

Who We Serve

Built for Micromobility & Personal EV Shippers

From a single e-bike export to recurring shipments of scooters and mobility devices, we work the way micromobility companies actually ship - correctly classed, on time for YYZ cargo departures.

E-Bike & E-Scooter Brands

Exporting e-bikes or e-scooters with battery installed? We handle UN 3171 Class 9 packaging so your units clear the cargo counter.

Hoverboard & Electric Skateboard Distributors

Shipping hoverboards or electric skateboards in bulk? We manage battery condition screening and UN-spec packaging for the full pallet.

Mobility Scooter Suppliers

Mobility scooters ship under UN 3171 with the battery installed - we prepare the packaging and documentation for CAO tender.

Common Questions

Micromobility Exporters Ask Us

What UN number applies to e-bikes, e-scooters, and hoverboards?

A battery-powered vehicle shipped with its lithium battery installed - e-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards, electric skateboards, and mobility scooters - ships under UN 3171 (Battery-Powered Vehicle). Unlike standalone battery entries, UN 3171 does not carry a Watt-hour exemption threshold, so it always requires dangerous goods classification and documentation.

Can the battery be shipped separately from the e-bike or scooter?

Yes. If the lithium battery is removed and packed in the same outer packaging as the vehicle, it reclassifies as UN 3481 (lithium-ion battery packed with equipment). A standalone spare battery shipped on its own ships under UN 3480, subject to Watt-hour based exemptions under Packing Instruction 965.

Why do e-bikes and e-scooters get rejected at the cargo counter so often?

The most common rejection reasons are missing or incorrect Shipper's Declarations, batteries that don't match the declared Watt-hour rating, damaged or swollen battery packs (which cannot fly under any circumstances), and packaging that doesn't meet UN specification for a Class 9 battery-powered vehicle.

Can a damaged or defective e-bike battery be shipped by air?

No. Damaged, defective, recalled, or waste lithium batteries are not permitted on passenger or cargo aircraft under any circumstances per IATA rules. If your unit has a damaged battery, it needs to be assessed and, where required, disposed of through a hazardous waste channel rather than shipped.

Can AÉRO-DG handle a rejected e-bike or scooter shipment at YYZ?

Yes. If your micromobility shipment received a Notice of Discrepancy (NOD) from Air Canada Cargo, WestJet, or another carrier at Pearson Airport, our fast-track team verifies the battery classification, repacks to UN specification, and re-documents it for same-day re-tender where possible.
